Western geisha denied independence

SYDNEY, Australia - File photo shows Australian geisha Sayuki (R) puts geisha makeup on a student while lecturing on Japan's geisha culture at Keio University in Tokyo in June 2010. The Australian newspaper reported in June 2011 that Sayuki, who in 2007 became Japan's first Western geisha, was denied independent operation because she is a foreigner.
